Testing the Waters

Before our family moved to rural Dwight from the suburbs many years ago, we had the well water on the farm tested for levels of bacteria and other substances that might prove harmful. We consulted with our dentist after the results showed a higher-than-normal level of fluoride in the water.

Throughout each day we test the waters in many ways, both important and trivial. We pose hypothetical questions to gauge feedback and response from others before making a decision. We literally test the temperature of microwaved or oven-baked food before taking that first big bite. We put out feelers…in our relationships, in business dealings, job hunting, in our prayers. This is a low-risk way to gain information before committing ourselves to a course of action.

In both my everyday life and spiritual journeying, I find myself frequently testing the waters. This is part of our human nature to question things and can be a wise and prudent practice…looking before leaping, taking a cautious approach to a new venture, trying it on a small scale before fully committing.

I have always empathized with Peter’s humanity (mistakes) and his impetuousness. I can relate to the many times he spoke before weighing the impact of his words. I might categorize him as a “leap before you look” kind of guy. (Mea culpa – I’m working on it!)

In this Sunday’s Gospel reading (Matthew 14:22-23), we have an example of Peter both trusting and testing the Lord. Specifically, I was struck by Peter’s response to Jesus who was walking on water toward the apostles in their storm-tossed boat. First, Peter questions if it is really the Lord speaking rather than a ghost. Then comes his request, “Lord, if it is you, command me to come to you on the water.”  At Jesus’ invitation, Peter did get out of the boat and walked on the water but then faltered and started to sink. He became distracted by the wind and weather. He lost sight of his goal…Jesus. Peter tested the waters but did not focus.

This Gospel story hits home with me and begs the question: What waters am I testing in my spiritual life in both positive and negative ways? Do I make it a habit to test the waters by seeking the Lord’s help and the inspiration of the Holy Spirit in my prayers, especially before speaking and acting? In what ways do I test these spiritual relationship waters in a negative manner by what I do and fail to do?

Dear Lord, free me from distractions and help me become a habitual and focused water tester. May I recognize the waters that can and should be tested today. Please give me your wisdom and guidance to either proceed with caution or plunge in with both feet.
