Dress for Success

Some days are easier than others. On those occasions I don’t think about the need to arm myself to face the world. I just go about my business lightly cloaked with joy and peace. I barely give a thought to defensive gear. If I do, it means dressing in layers, carrying an umbrella, or applying sunscreen.

While important, those are just examples of external protection. How often do I take stock of what protects me internally? I will admit that this is not a daily, deliberate habit for me. It was the petition I read at the beginning of the week from “Ask Mary” that took me down this path.

Ask her to remind you, before your feet touch the floor each morning, to put on the full Armor of God.

I thought I had a good general idea of what putting on the Armor of God entailed, but additional research was in order. I needed to have a clear picture of the help I was requesting from our Blessed Mother.

Putting on the Armor of God is a metaphor in the Bible from Ephesians 6:10-18. It means equipping yourself with spiritual virtues and divine truths to withstand life's temptations, negative influences, and everyday challenges.

The Armor of God consists of…

  • Belt of Truth: Living with integrity and embracing the foundational truths of our faith. Hug me tight, Lord. I count on your support always.

  • Breastplate of Righteousness: Protecting your heart and soul through moral living and God's grace. Guard my heart with your grace, heavenly Father.

  • Shoes of the Gospel of Peace: Being grounded and ready to spread the "good news" of peace, even in chaotic situations. Guide my steps in your paths of goodness and truth, dear Jesus.

  • Shield of Faith: Using your trust in God to deflect doubts and the "flaming arrows" of negativity. Protect and defend me in times of trial, my Savior.

  • Helmet of Salvation: Guarding your mind against anxiety and discouragement by remembering your spiritual identity and redemption. Safeguard my thoughts, dear God, and purify my intentions.

  • Sword of the Spirit: An impressive weapon, standing for the Word of God found in Scripture. Arm me with your grace and love, my constant Defender.

The goal and benefit of putting on this armor is to remain steadfast when facing difficult circumstances. As Christians, we can make sure our armor is firmly in place through active practices like daily prayer, studying scripture, and conscious alignment with God’s will.

No matter what the day brings or what challenges we face, we can dress for success when we mentally and spiritually put on our Armor of God. Can I make it part of my daily attire and an intentional habit? Putting on the armor of God does not entail changing our wardrobe. It does not require additional closet space. Sizing and color options do not enter the equation. No worries that we will all be identically dressed—God’s Armor is customized for our individual needs. Envision yourself dressing from head to toe in God's protection and grace. Will you join me in making this powerful tweak to your daily habit?
