Point Me in the Right Direction
Lately I have felt like I need to carry around a sign that says, “Point me in the right direction.” Just in case I look lost, or my brows are completely furrowed, please just point me in the right direction.
I have found myself missing several turns as I drive around town. Forgetting what I went upstairs for, and then having to climb back up the stairs for that ponytail holder I forgot or the load of laundry that I meant to switch over. Thank goodness for sticky notes (and those who have worked with me know how much I appreciate those! The more colorful, the better). Sticky notes have kept the sail of our family’s schedule in alignment with the prevailing winds and not adrift in the rocks.
We’ve all experienced those times of disarray. If our lives were a hairdo, then nearly every strand would be out of place. However, from my experience, these times of disharmony are times that God is trying to teach me something. The lesson does not always happen in the moment. (Wouldn’t that be convenient?) Oh no, the lesson comes after the experience so that we may look back and better understand what happened and why.
St. Paul’s letter to the Romans that we will read this weekend has helped give me solace in times of disarray:
The Spirit himself bears witness with our spirit that we are children of God,
and if children, then heirs, heirs of God and joint heirs with Christ,
if only we suffer with him so that we may also be glorified with him.
(Romans 8:16-17)
We have all received a Spirit of adoption (Romans 8:15). Through no wondrous works or faith of our own, we already hold the honorable title of an heir of God. We are heirs with Christ. Having that family tree with the Holy Trinity provides me with a calm and a clear direction of who I am. Directing any trials toward Him will allow us to be glorified with Him. And that is the right direction in which I need to be pointed.
Happy Holy Trinity Sunday!
