Our life can be a witness for others in little and big ways.

“Modern man listens more willingly to witnesses than to teachers, and if he does listen to teachers, it is because they are witnesses.” - Evangelii Nuntiandi 41

The Day the Music Died

I love picking up my kids from school. If your child is a “divulger,” then those moments when they get in the car after school are some of the most fruitful conversations you’ll get. It’s like everything is fresh in their minds, and you get to hear what is most pressing or the biggest highlights (or lowlights) of the day in those first minutes together in the car with them…

Fragile to Fearless

Yep. This graphic pretty much sums up my state of mind lately. And I am not very happy about it either! Fragility – the quality of being delicate or vulnerable. I know this is just part of the human condition. Or as my husband often reminds me, “We didn’t come with a guarantee.” But feeling fragile over a period of time is unsettling to say the least…

Theme of the Day

It’s Homecoming time-of-year for many high schools in the area. Homecoming traditionally brings with it an overall theme for the week, or sometimes there are even different themes for each day of the week so that kids can creatively celebrate by changing their wardrobe. Pick-a-decade Day, Class Shirt Day, and Spirit Day are just a few fun examples…

Put On Your Best Outfit

And over all these, put on love, that is, the bond of perfection. Colossians 3:14.

The essence of God is love. Perfect love, no less. In Colossians 3:14, Saint Paul give us a wonderful image of putting on love. Can you imagine actually putting on God as the most important and beautiful garment we can don each day? We would be literally wearing our hearts on our sleeves while robed in Love!…

This Teaching is Hard

The questions just kept coming. She asked, Where do Adam and Eve fit in if scientists say that we evolved from cavemen? Did God really take 7 days to create everything? He’s God, so why didn’t He just do everything all at one time? What evidence do we have that Jesus was crucified?…

All I Ask of You

I was pretty sure that Andrew Lloyd Webber had written the ultimate All I Ask of You song for Phantom of the Opera. But that was well before I ever heard the refrain from a hymn by Gregory Norbet, OSB…

Learn from Penelope

One week ago I started my 7th year of teaching at St. Mary's School. I teach English, so it seems obvious that I would read with my students. With all of my junior high classes, I read "We Don't Eat our Classmates" by Ryan T. Higgins. This is a children's book that has an awesome message for all ages…

Under the Influence

“…human beings moved by the Holy Spirit spoke under the influence of God.” 2 Peter 1:21

This verse from a recent daily Mass reading jumped out at me. The phrases “moved by the Holy Spirit” and “under the influence of God” spoke to my heart. Shouldn’t we all desire to be moved by the Spirit and to speak to others with words that are influenced by our relationship with God? What a way to live!

If It’s Just a Symbol…

Several years ago, I read about a Catholic American novelist and short-story writer named Flannery O’Connor. Flannery was invited to dinner with friends, one of which was a woman who was also a writer and in Flannery’s words was “a big intellectual.” Flannery recalled that she herself was quiet for most of the dinner discussion. Conversation after dinner went late into the evening, and guess what topic was brought up in the wee morning hours? The Eucharist.

Visual Cues

I have been lucky that in my 29 years in Pontiac I have had people around me who live their lives leading with their faith. As I have reflected and prayed about this week's writing, I realized that all of these people have a few things in common. First, they…

It’s How He Looks at You

I think a defining turning point in my relationship with God came when I recognized how He looks at me. For much of my life, God was the one who gave me rules to follow…

Fruitful Re-entry

I believe there is a phenomenon, of which I don’t know if there is a technical term. Let’s call it “re-entry.” Specifically, given this glorious summer season we have, let's call it “vacation re-entry...”

Passing the Test

I had planned on my writing for today to be something different, but then I read Thursday's readings and thought, "Ok God, I hear you." Now if I can teach my kids to listen to God when they are trying to do things on their own. The reading was from Genesis 22:1-22. Then God said: “Take your son Isaac, your only one, whom you love, and go to the land of Moriah. There you shall offer him up as a burnt offering on a height that I will point out to you.” God was testing Abraham…

Faith & Hope

Over the past weeks in our Scripture readings, we have heard about acts of faith and hope: the apostles in the midst of a storm at sea, waking Jesus for help; the parable of the mustard seed and the kingdom of God…
